Title:The psychological impact of traffic accident on participants
Abstract:The bachelor’s thesis examines the psychological consequences of road traffic accidents among participants and focuses on understanding a traffic accident as an event that can significantly affect an individual’s psychological balance and everyday functioning. A traffic accident is approached as a complex experience whose impact is not limited solely to physical injuries or material damage, but also includes a wide range of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on contemporary scientific findings related to traumatic responses, post-traumatic stress disorder, and coping strategies that are essential for understanding individual adjustment following a traffic accident. The empirical part of the bachelor’s thesis is based on a quantitative study conducted using a questionnaire administered to individuals who had been involved in road traffic accidents. The analysis showed that traffic accidents trigger pronounced psychological consequences in a proportion of participants, with the intensity of these consequences varying according to the severity of the accident and individual characteristics. The results indicate that psychological consequences are not limited to individuals involved in severe traffic accidents, but also occur among those with minor injuries or even without physical injuries, highlighting the importance of subjective perception of the accident. Coping strategies proved to be an important factor in managing these consequences, as more adaptive coping approaches were associated with lower levels of psychological distress. The findings of the bachelor’s thesis emphasize that psychological recovery after a traffic accident is neither self-evident nor uniform. The psychological state of participants is the result of an interplay between the objective circumstances of the traffic accident, individual resilience resources, and the social and institutional environment. The bachelor’s thesis thus contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the psychological impact of road traffic accidents and highlights the need for greater integration of psychological support into the care of traffic accident participants. The findings provide an important basis for the development of preventive and supportive approaches aimed at reducing long-term psychological consequences and improving the quality of life of affected individuals.
