Title:Incorporating physical activities into mathematics classes in the first educational cycle of elemntary school
Abstract:The purpose of the master's thesis was to prepare a collection of physical activities that teachers can include into mathematics lessons in the first educational cycle, and to examine their attitude and current use of physical activities in mathematics lessons. The practical part presents a collection of 72 physical activities, organised according to the topics and field of content in the mathematics curriculum. The empirical part includes a study based on a non-probability sample of 159 teachers from the first educational cycle. The results of the research show that teachers regularly include physical activities into mathematics lessons and recognise their added value. These activities contribute to higher motivation of pupils, more active participation, improved concentration, and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. They also foster a positive classroom climate and create a more relaxed learning environment. Teachers most frequently use short movement-based games within the classroom, followed by activities outside the classroom. The results show that the inclusion of physical activities in mathematics lessons is not influenced by teachers’ years of experience or by the grade level they teach. The main obstacles stated are inadequate space for carrying out the activities and a lack of time. Physical activities in mathematics lessons support the overall development of the individual, increase motivation and performance in class, and have a positive effect on improving the classroom community.
