Title:Attitudes toward embryo donation
Abstract:The development of biomedical technology, particularly assisted reproductive techniques, has significantly contributed to the treatment of infertility while simultaneously raising numerous questions related to the definition of parenthood. This thesis addresses embryo donation, a less explored aspect of reproductive medicine that is legally prohibited in Slovenia. The theoretical part presents the biological and social dimensions of parenthood, the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) associated with embryo donation, and discusses the legal, ethical, religious, and psychological aspects of embryo donation. International regulations and findings from foreign studies are also reviewed. To examine attitudes toward embryo donation, an online survey (N = 225) was designed based on a Swedish questionnaire model. The results indicate that most respondents support the introduction of embryo donation in Slovenia, with even stronger support for donation to infertile couples. A positive association was found between personal experience with infertility and a more favorable attitude toward donation, while gender and age differences were less pronounced. Differences based on religious affiliation were also less significant, except in the case of attitudes toward embryo donation for single women. Most respondents also agreed that donor anonymity toward the child should be maintained.
