Title:Trust of young people in police work
Abstract:This thesis examines the factors influencing trust in the police, with particular emphasis on young people as a socially sensitive group. Trust in the police represents an important element of institutional legitimacy and affects individuals’ willingness to cooperate with the police and comply with the legal order. The theoretical part presents the concept of institutional trust, the theory of procedural justice, and the impact of personal experiences, social context, and preventive programs on the perception of police legitimacy. Special attention is given to young people and their relationship with police authority. The empirical part is based on an online survey conducted among 539 respondents. The results show that trust in the police statistically significantly increases with age. A strong and statistically significant correlation was found between positive personal experiences with the police and higher levels of trust. Contact with the police within preventive programs was not statistically significantly associated with trust among young people. Gender and level of education were also not significant factors. The findings indicate that lawful, professional, and respectful conduct, as well as the quality of direct interactions between the police and the public, are crucial for strengthening trust.
