Title:The influence of mass media on protests: The case of student protests in Serbia : diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract:This thesis analyzed the role of mass media in student protests in Serbia, which began following an accident in Novi Sad in November 2024, when a station canopy collapsed, causing 16 casualties. The aim of the study was to examine how media reporting influences the perception of protests, individual motivation, and trust in various information sources. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data, providing in-depth insights into the perception of media and participation in the protests. The results showed that mass media are often met with distrust, as they were perceived as a tool of the authorities in shaping a negative image of the protests and protesters. Independent media and social networks emerged as key information sources, fostering a sense of solidarity, encouraging political engagement, and spreading alternative perspectives. Digital channels played a particularly important role, enabling rapid coordination, awareness-raising, and international visibility of the protests, while also revealing risks of manipulation and the spread of disinformation. The analysis confirmed that media are not merely information carriers, but active agents in shaping political reality. Their orientation influences both mobilization and demobilization of citizens, as well as the long-term dynamics of political participation. The study’s findings emphasize the importance of critical media literacy and a diverse and independent media landscape as foundations for strengthening democratic processes and active citizenship.
