Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava prisotnost izbranih aktivnih farmacevtskih učinkovin (API) v pitni in bolnišnični odpadni vodi rehabilitacijske bolnišnice v Avstriji ter splošne bolnišnice v Sloveniji.

Title:Analysis of pharmaceutical residues in drinking and hospital waste water
Abstract:This master's thesis investigates the occurrence of selected active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in drinking water and hospital wastewater from a rehabilitation hospital in Austria and a general hospital in Slovenia. The aim of the study was to assess potential exceedances of API concentrations in relation to available guidelines and recommended limit values for drinking and groundwater, to analyse the influence of the winter period on the occurrence of APIs in water, and to evaluate the relationship between the quantity of prescribed medicines in the Slovenian hospital and the measured concentrations in wastewater. Drinking water and wastewater samples were collected in both hospitals during the winter period, followed by chemical analysis of selected APIs. Results for the Slovenian hospital were compared with pharmaceutical consumption data from the general hospital and relevant scientific literature. The results indicate that the analysed APIs in drinking water did not exceed the recommended limit values of 0.004 µg/L and 0.002 µg/L for specific APIs, in accordance with WHO (2012) recommendations. In wastewater, API concentrations were significantly higher than the applied reference value of 0.4–0.5 µg/L, particularly for paracetamol, naproxen, caffeine, and ciprofloxacin. A strong correlation was observed between the quantity of prescribed medicines and their concentrations in wastewater (R² = 0.9332). For certain APIs, the results suggest possible accumulation and limited biodegradation in existing wastewater treatment systems. The drinking water results confirm appropriate water quality. The wastewater findings provide an important contribution to the development of monitoring strategies for micropollutants. Considering the detected concentrations of antibiotics, further evaluation of upgrading existing treatment systems to enhance removal efficiency is recommended.
