Zgodnji topografi so umetnost dokumentirali bodisi za lastne potrebe, brez namena objavljanja gradiva, bodisi v okviru sodelovanja z različnimi društvi, predvsem s Kaiserlich Königliche Zentral-Kommission für Erforschung und Erhaltung der Kunst- und Historischen Denkmale – v disertaciji krajšano centralna komisija. Ker zapuščine zgodnjih umetnostnih topografov in zapuščina centralne komisije za slovenski prostor do sedaj še niso bile sistematično pregledane z vidika dokumentiranja slovenske srednjeveške umetnosti, v nekaterih primerih pa niso bile še niti evidentirane, raziskava zapolnjuje pomemben deziderat v slovenski umetnostnozgodovinski literaturi.

Title:Legacies of the Early Art Topographers as a Source for Research of Medieval Art
Abstract:A catalog of fifty-nine individuals, known as early art topographers, was created as part of this dissertation. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these individuals documented medieval art monuments in Carniola and the Slovenian parts of Styria and Carinthia in writing and through visual arts and photography. This research included material relating to both secular and sacred art in all art forms; that is, architecture, painting, sculpture, and crafts. The appointed topographers documented art either for their own purposes, without the intention of publishing the material, or in cooperation with various associations, primarily the Imperial Royal Central Commission for the Investigation and Preservation of Art and Historical Monuments (Germ. Kaiserlich Königliche Zentral-Kommission für Erforschung und Erhaltung der Kunst- und Historischen Denkmale), referred to as the Central Commission in this dissertation. Because the legacies of the early art topographers and the Central Committee for the Slovenian region have not yet been systematically reviewed from the perspective of documenting Slovenian medieval art, and in some cases have not even been documented at all, this research fills an important gap in Slovenian art history literature. The central thesis of the dissertation was that the legacies of early art topographers contain previously unknown material for researching medieval art in Slovenia. This thesis was confirmed by numerous new discoveries about medieval art monuments, which in most cases add information to what is currently known about these works. The main contribution of the dissertation is the discovery of a description of the now-lost wall paintings of Kolovrat Castle and the discovery of photographic material showing a painted processional cross in a depiction of Saint Margaret of Antioch on a wall painting in Saints Primus and Felicianus Church in Črna pri Kamniku, which has almost completely faded in its current state. The dissertation also presents material for research on medieval art that has not been taken into account in the literature to date—specifically, photographs by Paul Hauser (1868–1914), the provincial conservator of the Central Commission for Styria, and Johann Wist (1841–1916), a conservator on the same Commission. Their archival material was found in the photo archives of the topographical collections for Slovenia and Styria in the art history library of the Institute for Musicology and Art History at the University of Graz. The research also revealed that the materials created by the early art topographers provide insight into the condition of churches and castles that were destroyed at the end of the nineteenth century or in the twentieth century. A striking example is the Gothic paintings of the old Saint Martin's Church in Bled, which were thoroughly documented by early art topographers before their destruction. The material is also an important source of information about society's attitude toward medieval art because it reveals how it was perceived by parish priests, parishioners, and those that documented it. There were often disagreements on issues related to the preservation of medieval church architecture, such as old chancels or wall paintings. The dissertation presents the first systematic inventory of published and archival material from early art topographers, which can be used for research on medieval art and related events before the First World War. This work will thus become an indispensable tool for further research on medieval art, restoration procedures, the personal legacies of topographers, and the activities of the Central Commission in what is now Slovenia.
