Abstract:Uvod: Za sindrom razdražljivega črevesja je značilna prisotnost različnih gastrointestinalnih simptomov.

Title:The impact of probiotics on irritable bowel syndrome in adults
Abstract:Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients also report a feeling of loss of freedom, emphasize the unpredictability of their symptoms, and experience stigmatization. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host. Important traits of probiotics include as antimicrobial activity and the ability to maintain the balance of the gut microbiota. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the impact of probiotics on alleviating symptoms in adult patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Methods: In this study, we employed a descriptive method, which served as the basis for a literature review. The literature search was be conducted in international databases, specifically PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library, as well as in the Google Scholar search engine. The search process is presented using a PRISMA diagram. Results: The results of the literature review indicated that probiotics have significant potential in alleviating irritable bowel syndrome. Most studies reported a reduction in abdominal pain and bloating, as well as an improvement in stool consistency following probiotic use. It was found that combinations of different strains—particularly those belonging to the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium—are often more effective than the use of single-strain probiotics. Discussion and Conclusion: Based on our review of the literature on the effects of probiotics in irritable bowel syndrome, we found that probiotics exert beneficial effects on the gut microbiota, reduce inflammation, and regulate communication along the gut microbiota–brain axis. The use of probiotics may help decrease the frequency and intensity of symptoms and improve the quality of life in adults with irritable bowel syndrome. However, the effects depend on the specific probiotic strain and individual patient response. Therefore, additional high-quality, long-term studies are needed to better understand their mechanisms of action and clinical efficacy.
