Title:Vpliv sobesedilnih dejavnikov, možnosti interakcije in znanja prozodije na bralne sposobnosti
Abstract:The paper’s interest was in the written language communicative competence of school children at the beginning and intermediate level. To realise it, the following aspects and interrelations of the competence were investigated: the degree of reading abilities of primary students, the influence of contextual and attention raising factors as pictures, discourse markers, punctuation and paragraph formation, as well as of interactional possibilities on reading comprehension skills, the negative influence of prosodic knowledge of the school children’s mother tongue on the pronunciation of English words and the possibility of prevention of this mother tongue interference. Knowledge tests carried out at primary schools, by asking 6th and 9th grade students to do pronunciation and reading comprehension tasks, served as methodological instruments. Having structured the data into charts and graphs, the following results were observable: the effects of pictures were beneficiary with regard to beginning level learners, the attempt of establishing an interactive potential was proved to be helpful for the intermediate students and the use of discourse markers, appropriate punctuation and paragraph formation brought about an improvement of achievements at both levels; on the other hand, the research also revealed obstructions to the achievement of good results: if the native and English word’s prosodic properties differed, the already stored knowledge of the prosodic properties of native words was a hindrance to the correct pronunciation of English internationalisms, which could not be completely prevented by marking the different stress pattern with bold and underlined script.
