Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava vprašanje zakrivanja žensk na presečišču liberalne politične teorije, zgodovinskih praks in sodobnih državnih politik.

Title:Veiling of women between freedom and regulation: liberal theory, islamic practice and state policies
Abstract:This master's thesis examines the issue of women's veiling at the intersection of liberal political theory, historical practices and contemporary state policies. The research begins with whether liberal theory consistently recognises women's religious and bodily autonomy, and to what extent liberal prohibitions on veiling differ from state veiling requirements in some Islamic countries. The analysis shows that female veiling is not a uniform or exclusive Islamic practice, but a historically variable phenomenon that has evolved into diverse forms in different cultural and political contexts. In the modern period, political regimes in different countries have often used veiling practices as part of broader ideological, modernising or religious projects, whereby the female body has become a symbol of political and social transformation. A comparison of liberal prohibitions on veiling and state demands for veiling shows that while these measures differ in their ideological justifications, they share the common feature of the state's interference with women's bodily and personal autonomy. The research therefore concludes that liberal theories of freedom in practice do not always consistently recognise women's religious and bodily autonomy when their choices deviate from prevailing liberal norms of understanding freedom and emancipation.
