Abstract:Dobrobit živali predstavlja pomemben vidik trajnostne živinoreje, njeno zanesljivo in objektivno ocenjevanje pa zahteva uporabo standardiziranih metod. Povzetek vključuje ključne elemente njihove prehranske ekologije, fizičnega in socialnega okolja in razmnoževanja.

Title:Verification of the Awin protocol compliance for goat welfare assessment with biological charateristics of the species
Abstract:Animal welfare is a key aspect of sustainable livestock production, and its reliable and objective assessment requires standardised methods. The aim of this master’s thesis was to assess the welfare of Boer meat goats using the AWIN protocol, examine its alignment with the biological characteristics of the species, and evaluate its suitability for assessment of meat-type breeds. Welfare was assessed on eight farms with approximately 200 goats using the two-level AWIN protocol, which comprises 18 indicators across four principles: feeding, housing conditions, health, and behaviour. The biological characteristics of goats were summarised from scientific literature, focusing on traits and behaviours of their ancestral species, the bezoar (Capra aegagrus), as well as extant wild representatives of the genus. The summary includes key elements of their nutritional ecology, physical and social environment, and reproduction. The welfare assessment results indicated generally favourable conditions across most indicators on the studied farms, although specific deficiencies were identified on each of them – most commonly inadequate body condition, poor bedding quality, and overgrown claws. Although originally developed for dairy breeds, the findings indicate that the AWIN protocol can be effectively applied to the meat-type Boer breed with only minor adjustments. Overall, the protocol comprehensively covers various aspects of animal life (feeding, housing, health, behaviour). However, certain species‑specific biological characteristics are insufficiently emphasized, e.g., the aspect of expression of natural behaviours. Therefore, its use is recommended as a guideline tool, but for a more balanced and comprehensive welfare assessment, additional simple indicators should be added that reflect natural behaviour and some other biological characteristics of the species.
