Title:Volunteering as an Opportunity for Learning Social and Emotional Skills: A Case Study of Youth Centers
Abstract:In this master's thesis, we focused on analyzing the experience of volunteer work, with an emphasis on the acquisition of social and emotional skills among volunteers. In the theoretical part, we defined volunteering and its key elements and presented it as an opportunity for learning social and emotional skills from the perspective of both the volunteer and the beneficiary. This is a case study of the Youth Workshops programme, in which volunteers, known as instructors, conduct activities in Slovenian elementary schools aimed at promoting the psychosocial development of adolescents, which presents learning opportunities for all involved. We placed the biggest emphasis on the volunteer's perspective, particularly in the empirical part. The research sample follows 9 volunteers active during the 2025/2026 school year, with whom we conducted semi-structured interviews. The purpose of this qualitative analysis method was to determine how volunteers experience this type of volunteer work and what significance they attribute to it, particularly in terms of acquiring social and emotional skills. We found that most volunteers view this experience as positive and beneficial. They place great importance on good relationships and cooperation among volunteers, as well as on high-quality and professional mentoring; however, they perceive a lack of support from teaching staff at the schools where they conduct workshops. In the course of their work, they also face many pedagogical challenges, which in some cases can be emotional stress; however, they view these experiences as contributing to their personal growth.
