Title:Income inequality among the elderly: demographic or economic factors?
Abstract:The master’s thesis addresses the issue of income inequality and financial distress among older adults in Europe, with a particular focus on a comparison between Germany and Romania. Income inequality is a complex socio-economic phenomenon that significantly affects living standards, social security, and individuals’ sense of well-being. The theoretical part examines the broader problem of income inequality, highlighting the influence of demographic, economic, and institutional factors, such as education, age, household structure, employment status, and social policies, on the financial vulnerability of individuals and households. The empirical part is based on data from the eighth wave of the SHARE survey, covering individuals aged 50 and above. Using a logistic regression model, the analysis estimates the probability of financial distress based on selected demographic, economic, and social factors. The results indicate that income, age, employment status, education, and the interaction between marital status and wealth are key factors influencing financial vulnerability among older adults. In Germany, the protective effect of the combination of marital status and wealth is particularly evident, whereas in Romania, education and employment emerge as the strongest factors reducing the likelihood of financial distress. The findings underscore the importance of the institutional and economic context and highlight the role of stable social systems and effective redistribution policies in enhancing the financial security of older adults. The thesis contributes to a better understanding of financial vulnerability among older Europeans and provides a basis for developing policies that reduce income disparities, promote social justice, and ensure long-term financial security in later life.
