Title:The impact of childhood victimization on the development of juvenile delinquency
Abstract:Childhood victimization refers to different forms of violence, abuse, neglect and other adverse experiences during childhood that can affect a child’s development. The consequences of such experiences can be long-lasting and may affect emotional, social, behavioral and physical well-being. Although occasional offending behavior may be part of growing up, in some adolescents it can develop into more serious forms of delinquent behavior. Based on a systematic review of longitudinal studies, this master’s thesis examines the relationship between childhood victimization, adverse childhood experiences and the development of juvenile delinquency. The thesis presents the main concepts, risk factors, gender differences and protective factors. The findings show that childhood victimization is an important risk factor for later offending behavior. The risk is especially higher when a child is exposed to long-term, repeated or multiple forms of victimization, and when other adverse factors are also present, such as poor family relationships, lack of support, school problems, or the influence of deviant peers. To understand juvenile delinquency, it is therefore necessary to consider the child’s past experiences, family environment, school engagement, peer relationships and social circumstances. Preventing offending behavior requires early identification of at-risk children, timely support, the strengthening of protective factors, and cooperation between families, schools, social work centers, the police and other institutions.
