Title:Economic Optimization of Complete Feed Mixture Composition for Pig Fattening
Abstract:Feed costs represent the largest share of total production costs in pig farming, and feed intake is the highest in fattening pigs among all production categories. The aim of this master’s thesis was to economically optimize the formulation of complete feed mixtures (CFM) for fattening pigs. That was attempted via using linear programming in the Dobrodej Reset software, based on different protein feed components (soybean meal, sunflower meal, rapeseed meal), with the inclusion of synthetic amino acids (lysine, methionine, threonine, tryptophan) and adjustment of crude protein (CP) content. According to nutritional standards, a reference complete feed mixture (CFM R) and its alternatives (CFM A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5) were optimized, varying the CP content and the selection of protein feed components. The results indicate that in a two-phase feeding system, the annual cost of the selected alternative (CFM A-5) is lower by € 9.5941 per pig place, and CFM A-5 is also the most cost-effective option in a three-phase feeding system, where the annual cost is lower by € 8.2178 per pig place. Comparison of feed cost results according to the number of feeding phases indicates that the three phase feeding system is more cost-effective for all complete feed mixtures (R, A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5). A simulation of increasing protein feed component prices shows a more pronounced increase in the cost of reference mixture (CFM R) compared to the alternative CFM A-5, regardless of the number of feeding phases. With increasing market prices of protein feed components, an optimization of complete feed mixtures through the inclusion of alternative protein sources, reduction of CP content, and increased inclusion of synthetic amino acids proved to be economically justified.
