Title:The effect of micronutrients on the expression of symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children
Abstract:Introduction: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children that often persists into adulthood. In addition to pharmacological and behavioral treatments, the role of micronutrients in managing symptoms is increasingly being studied. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted. The literature search was conducted across ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SAGE Journals Online, supplemented by Google Scholar and COBISS. The quality of the studies was assessed through critical appraisal, and the results are presented descriptively in an evaluation and synthesis table. Results: Nine studies were included in the review. The results show that micronutrients, especially Mg, Zn, Fe and vitamin D, are associated with a reduction in impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention, with improvements also seen in emotional regulation, general behavior, and interpersonal relationships. The effects were often more pronounced in children with micronutrient deficiencies and in combined treatment approaches. Discussion and conclusion: The findings suggest that micronutrients may contribute to a more holistic and safer approach to the care of children with ADHD, but the results of the studies are not entirely consistent. Further, methodologically consistent, long-term research is needed to clearly define the effectiveness of micronutrients.
