Abstract:This study investigates the bending capacity of large diameter girth-welded pipes. A nonlinear buckling analysis model subjected to combined internal pressure and bending loads is established. The effects of misalignment types, amplitudes, angles and mixed misalignments on the buckling behavior are studied. The results show that the bending capacity decreases significantly as the misalignment amplitude increases. Unequal thickness misalignment poses the greatest risk, exhibiting the most significant reduction in critical compressive strain. Different misalignment types exhibit high sensitivity to angle variations. The critical compressive strain increases as the misalignment angle increases for pipelines with offset misalignment, pipelines with ovality misalignment in both pipe segments, and pipelines with ovality misalignment in one pipe segment. The effects of mixed misalignment can be determined by the maximum misalignment on the compression side and the corresponding geometric characters. The mixed misalignment causes a decrease in critical compressive strain by 21.8%-56.6%, significantly weakening bending capacity and accelerating buckling.
