Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava gospodarski pomen razvoja in uvajanja nanotehnologij, ki predstavljajo eno najpomembnejših visokih tehnologij 21. stoletja.

Title:Economic significance of development and adoption of nanotechnology
Abstract:The thesis examines the economic significance of the development and adoption of nanotechnology, one of the most influential high technologies of the 21st century. Owing to its ability to manipulate materials at the atomic and molecular levels, nanotechnology enables the creation of new or improved materials, devices, and industrial solutions, thereby significantly contributing to economic growth, competitiveness, and sustainable development. Due to its broad applicability, nanotechnology is increasingly recognized as a key enabling technology across numerous sectors, including healthcare, electronics, energy, the automotive and textile industries, the food and cosmetics industries, and consumer products. The analysis demonstrates that nanotechnologies already play an important role in driving innovation, enhancing product efficiency, and reshaping market opportunities in the global economy. However, their rapid development is accompanied by challenges related to safety, regulation, and the assessment of health and environmental impacts. The thesis finds that the largest investments in nanotechnology research and development are made by the European Union, the United States, Japan, and emerging economies such as China and India, which have significantly strengthened their roles in this field over recent decades. Although Slovenia still lags behind the most technologically advanced countries, it is gradually improving its research and development capacities and increasing the implementation of nanotechnology-based solutions in companies. The findings confirm that nanotechnology is becoming a key driver of economic development and that its influence will continue to grow in the future. It offers extensive opportunities for innovation, the creation of highly skilled jobs, and the strengthening of international competitiveness, while also requiring appropriate regulatory and research support to ensure its safe and responsible integration into all segments of the economy.
