Title:Social capital and whistleblowing: the role of external mentors
Abstract:In our master's thesis, we discussed social capital, which can be defined as a set of social relationships, networks, trust and norms of reciprocity that enable individuals and groups to access resources, information and support. We found that the understanding of social capital is closely related to the work of three influential theorists: Pierre Bourdieu, James S. Coleman and Robert D. Putnam. Their contributions have significantly shaped the understanding of social capital and its use in contemporary social science research. We also explored the concept of whistleblowing, which represents a deliberate, voluntary, deliberate and optional form of revealing irregularities. Whistleblowing is not a uniform phenomenon, but can occur in different forms depending on the way information is disclosed. Researchers most often distinguish between internal and external whistleblowing. Research has shown that a whistleblower is often perceived as a disloyal individual in an organizational environment, which can result in whistleblowing being marginalized or even sanctioned, which encourages ethical silence As part of our master's thesis, we examined whether and how an external mentor influences both central concepts. When defining the concept of an external mentor, it is important to distinguish mentoring from other forms of professional support, such as consulting or formal supervision. While consultants usually offer specific professional advice to solve individual problems, mentoring involves a broader and longer-term relationship that encompasses both the professional and personal development of the individual. Mentoring also differs from a supervisory relationship, as the mentor does not have formal authority over the mentee and does not participate in their formal evaluation or promotion. Through interviews we conducted with individuals who have experience in revealing irregularities, we found that external mentors provide individuals with access to resources, information and support mechanisms that are often unavailable to them within their own organization, which further confirms their role as bearers of social capital.
