Title:Challenges women face in advancing to leadership positions
Abstract:This bachelor’s thesis addresses the challenges women face in advancing to leadership positions and the factors influencing their willingness to take on managerial roles. The aim of the thesis was to determine whether employed women express a desire for career advancement to leadership positions and how motherhood, the perception of equal opportunities for promotion, and level of education influence their willingness to assume leadership roles. The research area focuses on gender equality, women’s career development, and organizational and social factors affecting women’s advancement opportunities. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses women’s aspirations for career advancement, the impact of motherhood and family responsibilities, organizational and social barriers, gender stereotypes, and the importance of organizational support and equal opportunities in women’s career development. In the empirical part, a quantitative study was conducted using an online questionnaire created on the 1KA platform. The study included 138 fully completed questionnaires from employed women. The collected data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS program through descriptive statistics and statistical tests. The results of the study showed that employed women express a certain level of interest in advancing to leadership positions; however, statistical analysis did not confirm a statistically significant higher desire for advancement. Furthermore, no statistically significant differences were found between women with children and women without children regarding their willingness to assume leadership positions. The study also found no statistically significant relationship between the perception of equal opportunities for advancement, level of education, and women’s willingness to take on leadership roles. The findings indicate that women’s willingness to pursue leadership positions cannot be explained by a single factor but rather by a complex interaction of individual, organizational, and social circumstances. Organizations are encouraged to foster inclusive working environments, promote equal opportunities, and implement measures that support a better balance between professional and private life.
