Title:Human factor as a risk element in traffic safety
Abstract:Traffic safety is one of the key factors of modern society, with human beings playing a central and decisive role as road users. This diploma thesis examines the influence of the human factor as an element of risk within the traffic system and analyses how psychophysical abilities, behaviour, and responsiveness affect traffic safety. Particular emphasis is placed on the psychophysical characteristics of drivers and on factors such as driving speed, attention, perception of the traffic environment, and decision-making, all of which significantly influence traffic safety. The thesis also presents infrastructural and environmental measures for risk reduction, as well as the importance of appropriate traffic signalling. The analytical part of the thesis presents an analysis of traffic accidents in Slovenia during the period 2019–2024, focusing on the psychophysical characteristics of drivers, which are reflected in the most common causes of traffic accidents, such as inappropriate speed, improper overtaking, inadequate safety distance, and failure to yield the right of way. The results confirm that, despite advances in vehicle technology and infrastructure, the human factor remains the primary source of risk in traffic, as human behaviour and decision-making have a decisive impact on the safety of all road users. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the importance of coordination between humans, the environment, and the traffic system as a whole, and to emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to improving traffic safety.
