Abstract:Skupina držav BRICS, ki jo po prvem večjem valu širitve leta 2024 sestavljajo Brazilija, Rusija, Indija, Kitajska, Južna Afrika, Savdska Arabija, Združeni arabski emirati, Etiopija, Egipt in Iran, je zaradi svoje nagle demografske in gospodarske rasti na začetku 21. stoletja postala pomembna igralka na globalni ravni. Osrednji namen magistrske naloge je bil predstaviti aktualno podobo skupine BRICS, predvsem prebivalstvenih in gospodarskih značilnosti njenih članic s pomočjo izbranih demografskih kazalnikov.

Title:Actualisation of the demographic state concerning the BRICS group of countires and its inclusion in geography lessons
Abstract:Following its first major wave of expansion in 2024, the BRICS group — consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Iran — has become an important global actor due to its rapid demographic and economic growth at the beginning of the 21st century. The main purpose of this master’s thesis was to present the current profile of the BRICS group, particularly the demographic and economic characteristics of its member states through selected demographic indicators. Therefore, the first part of the thesis examines in greater detail the trends in total population size, natural and migration population change, average population density and its spatial distribution, age and sex structure, as well as life expectancy at birth. To provide a clearer understanding of the findings, a comparison with the economically most developed G7 countries was also conducted. The second part of the thesis focuses on the treatment of BRICS countries in geography education, primarily at the upper secondary school (gymnasium) level. This section includes a review of the current geography curriculum for gymnasiums and selected textbook materials. Three texts were prepared that may serve as supplementary teaching materials for inclusion in geography lessons. They may also represent a conceptual framework for the potential inclusion of parts or the entirety of these texts in the creation of new textbook or other didactic materials. The texts address three broader thematic areas. The first text presents the share of the world's population living in BRICS countries and the concept of multipolarity. The second text provides a more detailed presentation of the economic growth of the BRICS group compared to that of the G7 countries. The third text focuses on the increase in CO₂ emissions in BRICS countries as a consequence of their rapid demographic and economic growth.
