Abstract:V magistrskem delu je obravnavan fenomen institucionalizacije grafita, ki tradicionalno zaseda polje "nizke umetnosti". Likovne analize posameznih avtorskih del dopolnjujemo s primeri razstav, dražb in sodelovanj z institucijami. Zadnji del obravnava razvoj slovenske grafitne scene, ključne mejnike in spreminjanje percepcije grafita v lokalnem prostoru. Intervju z Gregorjem Purgajem ponuja neposreden vpogled v delovanje in proces institucionalizacije lokalnega ustvarjalca. Zaključek podaja ugotovitve o transformaciji ulične umetnosti iz marginalne subkulturne prakse v priznano obliko sodobne umetnosti.

Title:Street to Canvas, Canvas to Gallery: The Transition of Street Art into the Institutional Space
Abstract:This master's thesis examines the institutionalization of graffiti, a phenomenon traditionally occupying the domain of "low art". Although often perceived as an unwanted, deviant intervention in public space, we investigated graffiti as a historical phenomenon and analysed its development to facilitate a deeper understanding. In doing so, its core characteristics are defined, establishing clear boundaries between graffiti and street art. The sociological aspects of the graffiti subculture, alongside the legal and spatial contexts of street artists' activities, are also discussed. The central section focuses on street art's transition from informal urban environments into "high art" institutions. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, we examined the impacts of cultural capital, media, the art market, and institutional legitimation, framing graffiti as a critique of traditional "high art". By analysing selected established artists, the pathways from the street to the gallery and their influence on the contemporary art scene are presented. Visual analyses of individual artworks are supplemented by examples of exhibitions, auctions, and institutional collaborations. The final section addresses the development of the Slovenian graffiti scene, its key milestones, and the changing perception of graffiti within the local space. The 2004 exhibition "Grafitarji" (Graffiti Artists) is highlighted as a significant institutional turning point, complemented by the perspectives of local creators and institutions. An interview with Gregor Purgaj offers direct insight into the practice and institutionalization process of a local artist. The conclusion presents findings on the transformation of street art from a marginal subcultural practice into a recognized form of contemporary art.
