| Abstract: | Contemporary epic fantasy novels contain fictive epigraphs – small units of text that contribute to shaping the fictive world by adding important layers of information, such as descriptive detail, names of fictive personae, places, and events. They appear in various genres and contribute substantially to world-building. The world-building function of fictive epigraphs interconnects with the plot of the novel on various levels. The authorship of fictive epigraphs is fictive, since these texts deliberately give an impression of having been written by fictive personae from the fictive world. This feature contributes to the crucial world-building element in fantasy, and with it, the narrative function of the original author can transpose to the fictive author. |
