Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava povezavo med gospodarsko rastjo, okoljskimi spremembami in razvitostjo zavarovalniškega sektorja, pri čemer so emisije toplogrednih plinov uporabljene kot kazalnik okoljskih pritiskov.

Title:Economic growth, climate change and the role of insurance
Abstract:This master's thesis examines the relationship between economic growth, environmental changes, and development of the insurance sector, using greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator of environmental pressures. The topic is motivated by the growing relevance of climate change as one of the key global challenges significantly affecting economic system and the long-term development prospects of countries. The analysis focuses on the relationship between selected macroeconomic and insurance-related indicators and greenhouse gas emissions. Attention is given to the non-linear relationship between economic growth and environmental pressures within the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve. The results indicate the existence of a non-linear relationship between economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions, suggesting that emissions increase in the early stages of development and begin to decline at higher levels of economic growth. The role of the insurance sector proves to be complex, as total insurance premiums are statistically significantly associated with emissions, while insurance penetration does not exhibit a significant effect. In addition, investment in research and development emerges as an important factor in reducing emissions. The findings suggest that the reduction of environmental pressure is not an automatic consequence of economic growth, but deepends on structural changes, technological progress, and appropriate institutional frameworks. The thesis provides a better understanding of the insurance sector as an indirect factor in the relationship between economy and the environment.
