| Abstract: | The bachelor’s thesis addresses the design of a comprehensive information and wayfinding system for Pogrebno podjetje Maribor, using the Dobrava and Pobrežje cemeteries as case studies. The aim of the thesis was to examine how consistently designed information and wayfinding elements can improve visitor orientation, increase spatial clarity, and at the same time preserve the calm, respectful, and dignified character of the cemetery environment.
The theoretical section presents fundamental concepts related to spatial wayfinding, signage, information graphics, environmental graphics, and visual identity. It discusses the importance of information hierarchy, legibility, typography, colour, pictograms, materials, and the appropriate placement of signs within the environment. Particular attention is given to design for sensitive public environments, where communication must be sufficiently clear and visible without visually dominating the space. Ergonomic and technical guidelines are also presented, together with the importance of standardised templates and organised management of design assets for maintaining the long-term consistency of the system.
In the practical section, a case study, field observation, and photographic documentation were used to analyse the existing information and wayfinding elements at the Dobrava and Pobrežje cemeteries. The analysis revealed inconsistent use of typography, colours, materials, and logos, duplication of information, unclear content hierarchy, inappropriate placement of individual signs, and a lack of suitable spaces for temporary notices. Although the individual elements generally fulfil their basic functions, they do not operate as a sufficiently coherent and recognisable system.
Based on the theoretical foundations and findings of the field analysis, a proposal for a unified information and wayfinding system was developed. It includes solutions for main and secondary entrances, directional, identification, warning, interpretive, and memorial signs, as well as separate information display cases for notices intended for grave leaseholders and other visitors. The design is based on the existing visual identity of Pogrebno podjetje Maribor, a selected crimson colour accent, neutral grey and transparent surfaces, consistent typography, and a clearly defined information hierarchy. The proposed solutions were also presented through mock-ups illustrating their placement within the actual environment. |
