Title:Participant Roles of ChatGPT in Developing Writing Skills in German and English Classes in Primary and Grammar Schools
Abstract:This master's thesis examines the role of ChatGPT in the development of writing skills among learners of English and German in Slovenian primary schools and grammar schools. The study is motivated by the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence and large language models, which have significantly influenced communication, information retrieval and writing practices. As AI systems increasingly participate in the creation of written texts, important questions arise concerning authorship, academic integrity, learner autonomy and the future of foreign language education. The theoretical framework is based on Steinhoff's concept of the participant roles that ChatGPT can assume during the writing process: Ghostwriter, Writing Partner and Writing Tutor. These roles represent different forms of interaction between learners and artificial intelligence, ranging from the delegation of writing tasks to support through feedback, explanations and guidance. The thesis provides an overview of current research on artificial intelligence in education, particularly in relation to writing instruction and foreign language learning. It also discusses the historical development of artificial intelligence, the functioning of large language models, ethical challenges associated with AI use, digital competencies and the changing role of teachers in contemporary education. The empirical part of the study is based on a quantitative online survey conducted among pupils and students from Slovenian primary schools and grammar schools. The research explores how learners use ChatGPT when writing in English and German and examines potential differences related to educational context, language learning, gender and perceptions of ethical issues connected with artificial intelligence. The overall aim of the thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of generative artificial intelligence in foreign language education and to support the development of responsible, critical, and pedagogically meaningful approaches to AI-assisted writing.
