Čeprav so ugotovitve obetavne, so za dodatno potrditev učinkov in podporo širši implementaciji terapije s pomočjo psa v geriatrični oskrbi potrebne nadaljnje kakovostne raziskave.

Title:The impact of dog-assisted therapy on the quality of life of older people
Abstract:Ageing is a natural process, and maintaining a high quality of life is a key objective in promoting healthy ageing. Animal-assisted therapy, particularly dog-assisted therapy, has increasingly been recognized as a valuable non-pharmacological intervention in healthcare and social care settings. The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to examine the impact of dog-assisted therapy on the quality of life of older adults. A literature review was conducted using the Cochrane Library, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases. Following the application of predefined inclusion criteria, 19 studies were selected for analysis. The findings indicate that dog-assisted therapy has a positive effect on the quality of life of older adults. Participation in therapy was associated with improved mood and reduced levels of depression, loneliness, and stress. Furthermore, among individuals with dementia, dog-assisted therapy contributed to a reduction in agitation and aggressive behaviour, while also enhancing social interaction and communication. Based on the reviewed evidence, it can be concluded that dog-assisted therapy represents an effective non-pharmacological approach to improving the well-being and quality of life of older adults. Although the findings are promising, further high-quality research is required to strengthen the evidence base and support the wider implementation of dog-assisted therapy in geriatric care.
