Title:Emotional distress of couples coping with infertility
Abstract:Introduction: Infertility is becoming increasingly common in modern society and poses a significant challenge to couples, as it transcends the medical dimension and affects mental health, relationships, sexuality and quality of life. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the emotional distress experienced by couples struggling with infertility. Methods: This thesis reviews the scientific and professional literature using a predetermined search string aligned with the research question. The search was conducted in the PubMed, ScienceDirect and Wiley databases using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selection process present in flow diagram. The narrative synthesis was used. Results: Ten studies were included in the final analysis. The findings show that they experience significant emotional distress, particularly stress due to infertility, anxiety and depression, which are associated with a lower quality of life and strain on the relationship and intimacy. There are also partner effects, as the distress of one partner affects the other. Partner support, effective dyadic coping, spirituality and psychological counselling play a protective role. Discussion and conclusion: Infertility should be viewed as a shared experience of the couple, which is why a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach and the systematic inclusion of psychological support are important in clinical practice.
