Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava izkušnje brezdomnih oseb v stikih s policijo in drugimi institucijami. Naloga poudarja pomen prijaznega odnosa, razumevanja položaja brezdomcev in boljšega medinstitucionalnega sodelovanja.

Title:A view from the other side of the street: homeless people’s experiences with policing : diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract:The thesis examines the experiences of homeless people in their encounters with the police and other institutions. Since homelessness is one of the more visible forms of social exclusion, the research focused on their institutional treatment by the police. Homeless people are often the subject of many stereotypes by wider society. As people, who work in institutional settings, are also part of this society, the purpose of the research was to examine whether such beliefs are reflected in their work, and to determine how homeless people understand their treatment by the police, whether they perceive the police as a source of help or control, and whether they notice prejudice or differences in treatment. A qualitative research approach with semi-structured interviews was used. Seven homeless people and three employees of a homeless shelter participated in the research and their answers were analysed according to the research questions. It was found that their experiences with the police differ, mainly because of different past situations and the way police officers communicate with them. Homeless people understand the role of the police in two ways: more often as an institution of control, however, most of them still also perceive the police as a source of help. The findings show that the issue is tied to feelings of being judged in advance than to clear discrimination. The thesis emphasises the importance of a respectful attitude, understanding the situation of homeless people and improving cooperation between institutions.
