Abstract:Povzetek Uvod: Okužbe sečil so pogost zdravstveni problem pri ženskah in pogosto vodijo v ponavljajočo se uporabo antibiotikov. Iskanje je potekalo v podatkovnih bazah PubMed, Cochrane Library in CINAHL Ultimate prek EBSCOhost Web. Vključeni so bili znanstveni članki v angleškem jeziku, objavljeni do aprila 2026, predvsem randomizirane klinične raziskave in sistematični pregledi randomiziranih raziskav. Razprava in Zaključek: Dokazi o učinkovitosti probiotikov in fermentiranih živil niso enotni.

Title:The effect of probiotic and fermented food consumption on reducing urinary tract infections in women
Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Urinary tract infections are a common health problem among women and often lead to repeated antibiotic use. The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether probiotics and fermented foods contribute to the prevention of urinary tract infections in women. Methods: A literature review was conducted. The search was carried out in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL Ultimate databases via EBSCOhost Web. The review included scientific articles in English published up to April 2026, primarily randomised clinical trials and systematic reviews of randomised trials. The quality of evidence was assessed using the hierarchy of evidence. Results: A total of 131 records were identified; after removing duplicates and assessing eligibility, 8 sources were included in the final analysis. The results indicate that probiotics, particularly strains of the genus Lactobacillus, may help reduce recurrent urinary tract infections. The most encouraging effects were observed with vaginal or combined oral-vaginal probiotic use. Discussion and Conclusion: The evidence on the efficacy of probiotics and fermented foods is inconclusive. Probiotics appear to be a safe complementary option; however, based on the current evidence, they cannot be recommended as a reliable alternative to standard treatment.
