Abstract:V raziskavi je bil obravnavan vpliv prezimnih dosevkov mnogocvetne ljuljke (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in inkarnatke (Trifolium incarnatum L.) na pridelek koruze (Zea mays L.) ter možnost zmanjšanja uporabe dušika iz mineralnih gnojil ob njenem gnojenju.

Title:Maize (zea mays l.) yield after a sown winter cover crop
Abstract:The study investigated the effect of winter cover crops, namely Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.), on maize (Zea mays L.) yield, as well as the possibility of reducing the application of nitrogen from mineral fertilisers in maize fertilisation. Field trials were conducted in 2023 and 2024 on six agricultural holdings in Slovenia. The two winter cover crops were sown at two different sowing dates, while maize was fertilised with different rates of nitrogen from mineral fertilisers. The results indicate that crimson clover accumulated more nitrogen than Italian ryegrass and contributed towards a greater amount of symbiotically fixed nitrogen. The most favourable effect on silage maize and grain yield was achieved when maize was sown after crimson clover and fertilised with half the rate of mineral nitrogen fertiliser (107 kg N/ha). Silage maize and grain yields were comparable to, and in 2024 higher than, those of the control treatment in which the full rate of nitrogen fertiliser was applied (215 kg N/ha). In treatments without additional nitrogen from mineral fertilisers, yields were generally lower. Italian ryegrass effectively utilised the residual mineral nitrogen in the soil; however, its effect on increasing maize yield was not significant. The results of this study concurred that the inclusion of crimson clover in the crop rotation can reduce the use of nitrogen from mineral fertilisers without negatively affecting maize yield.
