Raziskava ponuja vpogled v prisotnost nemedicinske uporabe stimulansov med študenti v Sloveniji in poskuša razložiti kompleksnost pojava z vidika socialnih, vedenjskih in psiholoških dejavnikov.

Title:Non-medical use of stimulants among students and its association with psychosocial characteristics of students
Abstract:The non-medical use of prescription stimulants is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon among students, as they use them to improve focus, alertness, and, consequently, academic performance. This master’s thesis examines the prevalence of non-medical use of prescription stimulants among students in Slovenia and its association with students’ psychosocial characteristics. The study included 203 students studying in Slovenia. The aim of the master’s thesis was to determine how common the non-medical use of prescription stimulants is, what the most common motives are, whether use varies by field of study, and how it relates to the misuse of other substances, attitudes toward substance misuse, academic self-efficacy, depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress, and restlessness. Data was collected via an online questionnaire that included sociodemographic questions and translations of the SSQ, IRS, DASS-21, and CASES questionnaires. Statistical analyses were performed, which showed that the most common motives for non-medical use of stimulants are related to academic performance (the desire for focus and greater efficiency). Differences in use by faculty were not statistically significant. A statistically significant positive association was found between recreational substance use and non-medical use of stimulants, as well as between permissive attitudes toward stimulant use and non-medical use of stimulants. Academic self-efficacy did not prove to be a statistically significant predictor of stimulant use, nor did it moderate the relationship between depression, anxiety, stress, and non-medical use of stimulants. Depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress were statistically significant positive predictors of non-medical stimulant use. Among the individual predictors, only depression was a statistically significant positive predictor. Restlessness was not a statistically significant predictor. The study offers insight into the prevalence of non-medical use of stimulants among students in Slovenia and attempts to explain the complexity of the phenomenon from the perspective of social, behavioral, and psychological factors. The findings can serve as a starting point for designing prevention programs, raising awareness of risks, and developing support strategies.
