Abstract:Populacijska dinamika osmerozobega smrekovega lubadarja (Ips typographus (Linnaeus, 1758)) je izrazito temperaturno odvisna, zato je razumevanje njegove fiziološke tolerance na temperaturne ekstreme ključno v kontekstu podnebnih sprememb.

Title:Effect of developmental and short-term temperature acclimation on thermal tolerance in bark beetle ips typographus (linnaeus, 1758) (coleoptera: curculionidae: scolytinae)
Abstract:The population dynamics of the eight-toothed spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus (Linnaeus, 1758)) are strongly temperature-dependent; therefore, understanding its physiological tolerance to temperature extremes is crucial in the context of climate change. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of developmental temperature and short-term acclimation of adult individuals on thermal tolerance, expressed as cold and heat tolerance. Individuals were reared in spruce logs at three constant temperatures (17 °C, 24 °C and 31 °C), after which adult beetles were acclimated at the same three temperatures, resulting in nine combinations of developmental and acclimation regimes. Cold tolerance was assessed using recovery time from chill coma (2 °C for 2 h), while heat tolerance was evaluated by measuring the time to heat-induced immobilisation under acute thermal stress (43 °C). The results showed a statistically significant effect of both factors on thermal tolerance, with adult acclimation having a stronger influence. In the heat tolerance test, a significant interaction between developmental and acclimation temperature was also detected, with the highest tolerance observed in the combinations involving higher temperatures. These findings confirm the high phenotypic plasticity of adult individuals and highlight the importance of short-term acclimation for survival under conditions of increasingly frequent temperature extremes.
