Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava pojav digitalnega vigilantizma s poudarkom na t.i. lovcih na pedofile.

Title:Digital vigilantism: the case of paedophile hunters : diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract:This thesis explores the phenomenon of digital vigilantism, with a focus on so-called paedophile hunters. It is an event that has developed alongside the rise of the internet and social media, where individuals or groups take justice into their own hands by publicly exposing alleged offenders. Although such actions are often driven by a desire to protect the community, they also raise important questions about legality, fairness, and potential consequences. The first part of the thesis explains what vigilantism is and how it has evolved in the digital environment. Digital vigilantism differs from traditional forms mainly because it takes place online, where information spreads quickly and reaches a wide audience. As a result, the consequences for individuals can be more severe and long-lasting, even in cases where they are later proven innocent. The central part of the thesis focuses on paedophile hunters, who establish contact witch suspected offenders online and then publicly expose them. While their actions are often perceived as positive, particularly in terms of protecting children, such practices can interfere with official procedure. They may hinder police investigations, complicate the collection of evidence, and in some cases lead to false accusations and public shaming of innocent individuals. The thesis also addresses the situation in Slovenia, where this phenomenon exists but is not yet widespread. Nevertheless, the legal framework in this area is not entirely clear, which creates uncertainty about what is permissible. Formal supervisory authorities also tend to approach such practices with caution. In conclusion, the thesis highlights that digital vigilantism is a complex situation. On one hand, it can contribute to greater awareness and a sense of security, but on the other hand, it can also lead to serious negative consequences. Therefore, it is important to better understand this occurrence and regulate it appropriately.
