Title:Business intelligence in small and medium sized companies
Abstract:The master’s thesis examines the use of business intelligence systems in small and medium-sized companies in Slovenia and their role in supporting business decision-making. In the contemporary business environment, companies have access to increasing volumes of data, but its value depends primarily on their ability to transform it into timely, understandable, and useful information. Particular attention is given to the use of business data, the most commonly applied analytical tools, the perceived benefits, and the barriers companies face when implementing and using business intelligence systems. The findings show that Slovenian small and medium-sized companies recognise the importance of data-driven decision-making, although the level of business intelligence adoption varies among them. Microsoft Excel and solutions integrated into companies resource planning systems are the most frequently used tools, while data monitoring is primarily focused on revenue, costs, sales, profitability, and inventory. Medium-sized companies use business intelligence systems more frequently than small companies. Having a formally designated person or department responsible for analytics was not found to be associated with a higher perceived usefulness of these systems. The most significant barriers include a lack of time, expertise, and adequately qualified employees, as well as implementation costs. The findings confirm that successful use of business intelligence systems depends not only on technology but also on digital competencies, organisational capabilities, and the company’s readiness to make decisions based on data.
