Podatki so bili zbrani s poglobljenimi polstrukturiranimi intervjuji.

Title:Manifestation of Mauss's Principles of Gift-Giving in Contemporary Gift-Giving Rituals: A Case Study of a Birthday Celebration in Ptuj
Abstract:This Master's Thesis explores the manifestation of Marcel Mauss's principles of gift-giving in everyday practices, with an emphasis on their internalization. The main aim is to shed light on how obligation, reciprocity, equivalence, and sociality constitute contemporary gift-giving rituals within a specific local context. The research is based on a qualitative methodological approach, with data collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews as part of a case study in Ptuj. The analysis includes systematic coding of motives, triple obligations, circulation and temporal lag, social context, moral norms, emotional responses, and ritual performativity. The results confirm that a gift functions as an entrance ticket into a relationship, with personalization and cognitive investment taking precedence over the material functionality of the gift. We find that the gift-giving process follows a structured five-phase ritual that – despite contemporary consumer culture and digitalization – preserves the traditional core of social cohesion. The discussion reveals that Mauss's principles manifest as a solid social framework that adapts to life cycles and specific family dynamics. We conclude that gift-giving in the context of this case study in Ptuj functions as a total social fact that, through the imperative of gratitude and respect, continuously creates and protects social bonds.
