Title:Learning German as a Fourth Language among Immigrant Students from Former Yugoslav Countries
Abstract:This master's thesis examines learning German as a fourth language among immigrant students from the countries of the former Yugoslavia in Slovenian primary schools. The aim was to determine how these students experience learning German, what role multilingualism plays, and how school, teachers, family, and the wider environment influence their learning. The theoretical part presents multilingualism, migration, the inclusion of immigrant students in Slovenian schools, motivation in foreign language learning, and the specific features of teaching German in a multilingual environment. Special attention is paid to the first language, linguistic identity, and teacher support. The empirical part is based on an online questionnaire completed by eighty-three students from grades three to nine. Eighty were included in the final analysis. The results show that students generally perceive German as useful and important for the future, but also as demanding, especially in grammar, writing, and sentence formation. Other languages supported some students in learning German, although not all participants experienced this equally. The study highlights the importance of supportive, inclusive, multilingualism-friendly teaching that considers immigrant students' linguistic experiences, needs, and abilities.
