Title:Personal saving in the United States
Abstract:The diploma thesis analyzes the characteristics and dynamics of personal saving in the United States, with an emphasis on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical framework builds on the definitions of personal saving, the life-cycle hypothesis, and the role and significance of financial literacy. The empirical part focuses on the determinants and analysis of personal saving in the US, providing an in-depth examination of the excess savings accumulated during the health crisis. Furthermore, the thesis explores the role and importance of healthcare savings via Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). In this thesis, we found that personal saving in the United States increased following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also found that higher household incomes, driven by increased government spending through fiscal support packages aimed at mitigating the negative economic effects of the pandemic, contributed to this increase. As a result, the overall level of personal saving in the United States rose.
Keywords:personal saving, United States, COVID-19 pandemic, excess savings, financial literacy, Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
