Hunov, Alanov in Gotov.

Title:The integration of "barbarian" peoples into the Roman army during the late antiquity
Abstract:This Master's thesis examines the process of integration of members of "barbarian" peoples into the late Roman army from the 3rd to the 5th century and their impact on the transformation of the Western Roman Empire. The work is based on critical analysis of written sources, from the chronicles of Ammianus Marcellinus and Zosimus to legal texts such as the Notitia Dignitatum, as well as contemporary archaeological findings. The third century represented a turning point for the Roman Empire. Political instability with more than twenty emperors in fifty years was accompanied by severe inflation. Beyond the borders, dangerous alliances of barbarian peoples formed, such as the Huns, Alans, and Goths. Unity was restored under Diocletian, who introduced a tetrarchic system of rule and separated military from civil service. Key historical events include the arrival of the Goths across the Danube and the catastrophic Battle of Adrianople in 378, where the Goths defeated the Roman army in the East. Emperor Theodosius I. concluded a groundbreaking treaty with the Goths in 382, which allowed them autonomous settlement in Thrace. This arrangement laid the foundation for the emergence of later Germanic kingdoms. The thesis analyzes various categories of barbarian settlers. Special attention is given to terminological questions, as terms often overlapped and changed. The military equipment of the late Roman army shows a synthesis of Roman and "barbarian" influences. Archaeological evidence suggests that material culture did not allow for clear distinction between Romans and "barbarians", as influences spread primarily from the empire into "Barbaricum". The careers of successful military commanders of barbarian origin demonstrate the possibilities of social advancement through military service. Research shows that the integration of barbarians was a deliberate military strategy that allowed emperors to maintain military strength despite demographic challenges. The "barbarism" of the late Roman army was largely an artificial construction drawn from classical ethnographic stereotypes. "Barbarian peoples" were not merely destroyers of the Roman order, but active shapers of new political and social structures in the post-Roman world.
