Title:Inflation stress in Slovenia
Abstract:The inflationary episode after 2021 reached the highest levels in the euro area in the last four decades, and in Slovenia the highest levels since the mid-1990s, which had significant consequences for households, including a marked decline in real income and purchasing power and an increase in economic uncertainty. This episode highlighted the need for an in-depth study of the consequences of inflation at the level of the individual, as it became evident that rising prices cause not only measurable economic consequences but also a psychological burden, which we define as inflation stress. It refers to the subjective response of individuals and households to a rise in the general price level, which manifests itself in feelings of financial strain, uncertainty and loss of control, and leads to adjustments in consumption, saving and investment behaviour. In the long term, it may also be associated with poorer mental health. Despite the importance of this phenomenon, a review of the existing literature reveals that inflation stress and its determinants remain insufficiently researched, particularly outside the American institutional environment, as empirical analyses for Slovenia and comparable small open economies of the euro area are virtually non-existent. This master's thesis therefore focuses on the study of inflation stress among Slovenian consumers, analysing differences in its level across individual socio-demographic groups. Inflation expectations are treated as the key intermediate link between actual price developments and their subjective perception. The results show that the level of inflation stress among Slovenian consumers remained relatively high even in the period when measured inflation had already approached the target value of the European Central Bank, confirming that the psychological burden does not subside simultaneously with the moderation of price growth. Consumers perceived price increases most strongly for food, fuel and energy, that is, for goods they purchase most frequently. There are no statistically significant differences in the level of inflation stress between genders, whereas differences are strongly evident with respect to age, education and income. The most burdened are middle-aged consumers, consumers with lower education and those with the lowest income per household member. The presented findings and conclusions may in the future serve as a basis for designing targeted economic and social measures to mitigate the consequences of inflation stress among the most vulnerable groups of the population and to strengthen financial literacy and trust in institutions.
