Title:Credit demand in the United States
Abstract:This bachelor's thesis examines the demand for credit in the United States, with a particular focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household credit activity and access to credit. Credit represents an important source of financing for consumption, housing purchases, education, and other major life expenditures; therefore, changes in the credit market significantly affect the financial position of households and the functioning of the overall economy. The thesis presents the characteristics of the U.S. credit system, the main credit products, the factors influencing individuals' creditworthiness, as well as the institutional and regulatory framework of the U.S. credit market. It also discusses the findings of recent research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on credit demand, access to financing, lending standards, and household behavior in the U.S. credit market. The results of the analysis show that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the demand for credit in the United States. During the pandemic, the share of households submitting credit applications declined, while the share of individuals who did not apply for credit because they expected their application to be rejected increased. The findings also indicate that the rejection rate of credit applications among actual applicants did not decrease during the pandemic but increased slightly; therefore, the hypothesis proposing a decline in the credit application rejection rate was not confirmed. In the post-pandemic period, the observed indicators gradually moved towards their pre-2020 levels; however, they did not fully return to the levels recorded before the pandemic. The findings confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic affected both households' willingness to borrow and access to credit. The study highlights the importance of monitoring not only submitted and rejected credit applications but also the share of individuals who do not apply for credit because they expect their application to be rejected, as this indicator provides a more comprehensive understanding of changes in the U.S. credit market. The findings of this thesis provide a useful basis for future research on the credit market and for the development of measures aimed at improving access to financing and strengthening the resilience of the credit system to future economic crises.
