Osrednji del obravnava posamezne primere zgodnjenovoveških mestnih špitalov v Celju, Mariboru, Ormožu, Ptuju, Slovenj Gradcu in Slovenski Bistrici.

Title:City hospitals in Slovenian Styria in the early modern period
Abstract:This master's thesis examines the development of hospitals in the territory of present-day Slovenia, with particular emphasis on city hospitals in Slovenian Styria from the late Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century. The thesis first presents the broader European context of the emergence of hospitals as charitable institutions under the influence of the Church, intended to provide care for the poor, sick, and elderly, as well as their gradual development into more organized healthcare and social care institutions. The thesis then examines the development of hospitals in Slovenia, where, with the development of towns, they became important institutions under municipal administration, financed through donations, estates, and other sources of income. Their operation was closely connected to the economic and social conditions of the local environment. The central part of the thesis examines individual examples of early modern city hospitals in Celje, Maribor, Ormož, Ptuj, Slovenj Gradec, and Slovenska Bistrica. Particular attention is paid to their establishment, organization, administration, and economic foundations. An important part of the thesis is also the transcription and analysis of sources from 1754. These are the Theresian censuses, compiled as part of the administrative reforms of the period, which provide insight into the property, social, and occupational structure of the population associated with four hospitals (in Celje, Maribor, Slovenj Gradec, and Ptuj). The analysis shows that the hospitals in these cities had a similar organization and function but differed in terms of the extent of their assets and the structure of their subject population. The master's thesis thus presents the operation of hospitals in the early modern period not only as charitable institutions, but also as significant economic entities, while providing insight into the social property structure of the population in the 18th century. Based on the analysis of sources, the thesis contributes to a better understanding of the role of hospitals within the broader social and economic context of the Slovenian territory.
