Title:Social pressure and singlism: perceived pressure for a relationship and fear of being single
Abstract:The primary objective of this master's thesis is to explore the experience of singlehood in young adulthood and to examine the factors shaping the experience of single status and its relationship with individual well-being. The theoretical part addresses singlehood as a complex, multidimensional social phenomenon, paying particular attention to personal and sociodemographic factors, social norms and pressures, singlehood stigma, and singlism. It also examines the association between singlehood, mental health, and life satisfaction. The empirical part adopts a quantitative design. Using an anonymous questionnaire completed by single university students, we examine perceived social pressure, fear of being single, and the factors associated with their experience. The findings indicate that young adults perceive greater pressure to enter a romantic relationship from family than from friends. They also perceive that family has a stronger preference for them to be in a romantic relationship compared to friends. Women report a higher fear of being single than men, whereas no differences were found for perceived social pressure based on gender or age. Perceived social pressure is positively associated with fear of being single. Higher levels of pressure and fear are also associated with the feeling of having been single for too long relative to one's age, as well as a greater desire for a romantic relationship. Furthermore, individuals without prior serious relationship experience also report a higher fear of being single.
