Abstract:V diplomskem delu smo se osredotočili na sintezo mentil metakrilata (MnMA) in njegovo uporabo za pripravi polimernih materialov. MnMA smo sintetizirali iz mentola in anhidrida metakrilne kisline ob prisotnosti katalizatorja 4-(dimetilamino)piridina (DMAP). Po končani reakciji smo produkt izolirali in očistili. Sintetizirani mentil metakrilat smo karakterizirali z infrardečo spektroskopijo s Fourierjevo transformacijo (FTIR) in protonsko jedrsko magnetno resonančno spektroskopijo (1H NMR). Poleg tega smo s polimerizacijo emulzij z visokim deležem notranje faze pripravili porozne polimerne monolite oziroma poliHIPE materiale. Pri njihovi pripravi smo spreminjali delež zamreževala etilen glikol dimetakrilat (EGDMA). Pripravljene polimerne materiale smo karakterizirali z vrstično elektronsko mikroskopijo (SEM), s katero smo proučili njihovo morfologijo, ter s FTIR spektroskopijo, s katero smo potrdili prisotnost značilnih funkcionalnih skupin monomernih enot v polimernih verigah.

Title:Synthesis of a menthol-derived methacrylate monomer for the preparation of a functional polymer
Abstract:This thesis focuses on the synthesis of menthyl methacrylate (MnMA) and its use in preparing of polymeric materials. MnMA was synthesised from menthol and methacrylic anhydride in the presence of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) as a catalyst. After the reaction was complete the product was isolated and purified. The synthesised menthyl methacrylate was characterised using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H NMR). The results obtained using both analytical methods were compared with those of the starting compounds, and changes in the characteristic functional groups and signals were monitored. The synthesised MnMA was then used as a monomer to prepare of polymeric materials by photoinitiated free-radical polymerisation. Polymerisation was carried out in bulk and in solution using different crosslinkers and a comonomer. In addition, porous polymer monoliths were prepared by polymerising of high internal phase emulsions. During the preparation of the polyHIPE materials, the amount of the EGDMA crosslinker was varied. The prepared polymeric materials were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FTIR spectroscopy. For the polyHIPE materials, the diameters of the primary pores were additionally determined from SEM images, and their size and distribution were compared among samples containing different amounts of EGDMA.
