Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava učinke nadgradnje železniškega odseka Maribor–Šentilj–državna meja, ki predstavlja pomembno mednarodno povezavo slovenskega železniškega omrežja in del jedrnega omrežja TEN-T. Namen dela je analizirati stanje proge pred nadgradnjo, predstaviti izvedene infrastrukturne posege ter oceniti njihov vpliv na tehnične, prometne in varnostne parametre odseka. Analiza stanja pred nadgradnjo je pokazala, da so dotrajana infrastruktura, omejene hitrosti in zastareli sistemi vodenja prometa vplivali na zanesljivost in pretočnost proge. V okviru nadgradnje so bili izvedeni prenova tirne infrastrukture in postaj, izgradnja predora Pekel in viadukta Pesnica, odprava nivojskih križanj ter posodobitev signalnovarnostnih sistemov.

Title:Impacts of the upgrade of the Maribor-Šentilj-state border railway section
Abstract:The diploma thesis examines the effects of the upgrade of the Maribor–Šentilj–state border railway section, which represents an important international connection within the Slovenian railway network and forms part of the TEN-T core network. The purpose of the thesis is to analyse the condition of the line before the upgrade, present the implemented infrastructure measures, and assess their impact on the technical, operational, and safety parameters of the section. The analysis of the pre-upgrade condition showed that worn infrastructure, limited speeds, and outdated traffic control systems affected the reliability and capacity of the line. The upgrade included the renewal of track infrastructure and stations, the construction of the Pekel tunnel and the Pesnica viaduct, the elimination of level crossings, and the modernisation of signalling systems. Key structures were also designed to allow for the future installation of an additional track. Following the upgrade, technical parameters improved, permitted speeds increased, travel times were reduced, and line capacity were increased. Despite the increased capacity, the traffic analysis indicates a high level of utilisation of the single-track line, with the number of trains on the analysed working day exceeding its available capacity. Due to the continued growth in traffic, particularly passenger services, the single-track configuration is staying the main constraint on the further development of the section. The results confirm the positive effects of the upgrade while also highlighting the need for the construction of a second track as soon as possible, which would enable a substantial increase in capacity and more stable railway operations.
