Title:The association between the kindergarten environment and the physical activity of children of the second age period
Abstract:Physical activity in the preschool period is one of the fundamental factors of a child's holistic development, with kindergarten playing an important role in creating a stimulating environment for movement and forming healthy physical habits. The purpose of the thesis was to investigate the relationship between the quality of the kindergarten environment and the level of physical activity of children of the second age group. 68 children and 10 educators participated in the study. The level of physical activity of children was objectively measured with ActiGraph accelerometers, and the quality of the kindergarten environment was assessed with the MOVERS assessment scale. The results showed that children did not reach the recommended level of physical activity while staying in kindergarten, and the quality of the kindergarten environment was assessed at a level between minimal and good. A weak positive relationship was found between the total assessment of the quality of the environment and the total physical activity of children, while the relationship with MVPA was not statistically significant. Statistically significant positive relationships with total physical activity and MVPA were found in the subscales relating to support for physical activity and critical thinking, and to cooperation between kindergarten and family. There were no statistically significant differences in physical activity between girls and boys, and older children achieved a statistically significant higher level of MVPA than younger children. The research contributes to a better understanding of the connection between the quality of the kindergarten environment and the physical activity of preschool children, while also emphasizing that in order to promote their physical activity, in addition to appropriate spatial and material conditions, high-quality pedagogical practices and the active role of educators are especially important.
