| Abstract: | Since antiquity, literary translation has had a special meaning. Many people believe literary translation is one of the most complicated forms of intercultural communication. Above all, translating dialect is very demanding. The novel White Teeth is the first novel written by Zadie Smith. It was a major publishing success. It tells a story of modern, culturally-diverse London and of three families from assorted ethnic backgrounds. The main story spans 1975 to 2000; however, it also reaches back to 1907 and earlier. The author uses many different dialects of English: Jamaican Creole, urban youth slang and Cockney. In my thesis, I focus on Jamaican Creole. This language variety exhibits different characteristics: simplified grammar and phonology, and a distinct vocabulary. Several of these characteristics are visible in the novel, where Jamaican Creole can be distinguished from Standard English at first sight. There are different translation strategies possible; however many interesting features are lost when translating dialect. |
