Title:ASSEMBLY CAMP IN MELJE AS SEEN BY SLOVENE WRITERS
Abstract:The German occupation of a part of Slovenian territory in April 1941 meant a breaking point in the lives of many people. The occupier came to Lower Styria with the goal to Germanise the territory. The Nazis intended to drive out all the people who could stand in the way of their plans. Among the victims there were also Slovene authors who interfered with the plans of the occupier through their profession, writing and national awareness. First, the Nazis established migration headquarters in Maribor and subordinate agencies to organise deportations; later, they established assembly camps in different places in Lower Styria. In Maribor they reorganised a part of the barracks in Melje into a camp. Shortly after, the Nazis started to arrest writers, who were brought to the barracks in Melje or some other assembly camp, where they waited to be deported. They were brought to different locations in Serbia, some also in Croatia. Different Slovenian newspapers reported about the exiles of people from Lower Styria, the problem of exile was also depicted by many writers in their work.
Keywords:Nazism, Lower Styria, Slovenian writers, assembly camp in Melje, exile.
