Title:STUDENT´S SELF EVALUATION OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS AT THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR
Abstract:This diploma thesis in the field of business communication is based on self-evaluation of communication skills of undergraduate students of nursing care at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Maribor. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of a summary of basic communication notions, business communication and communication in nursing care. It also includes notions related to evaluation and self evaluation in higher education. By means of a questionnaire consisting of closed-ended questions, we studied self evaluation of communication knowledge and communication competence of fifty candidates for graduation in nursing care. We examined and presented the results of the survey and classified the average grading of knowledge and competences into three categories. We established that the first category (insufficient knowledge) contains notions that are especially specific to business communication. The second category (modest knowledge) contains general notions that mostly refer to communication of managing personnel in a work process. The third category (sound knowledge) contains communication skills that are typical for working in nursing care. In spite of classifying knowledge and competence into different categories, we established that the third category of knowledge and competence (sound knowledge or competence) contained identical communication notions with the exception of written communication. We can sum up by saying that undergraduate nursing care students at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Maribor receive a solid training only in those communication areas that are indispensable for working in nursing care.
